　　23、但是，在理性支配下的“慧骃”却不会因自我具有许多优点而感到骄傲，就像我并不会正因自我没有少1条腿或者1条胳膊而感到骄傲一样；虽四肢不全的人肯定会痛苦，但头脑正常的人也决不会正因自我四肢齐全就吹嘘起来。这个问题我谈得较多，为的是想尽一切办法使英国的“野胡”们不至于叫人不能忍受；因此我在这儿请求那些沾染上这种荒谬罪恶的人，不好随便走到我的面前来。

　　28、两匹马走到我跟前，仔细地端详我的脸和手。那匹灰色马用右前蹄把我的礼帽摸了一圈，弄得不成样貌，我只得摘下来整理一下重新再戴上去。它和它的伙伴（一匹栗色马）见此更加惊讶了。栗色马摸了摸我的上衣襟，发现那是松松地在我身上挂着时，它俩就露出了更加惊奇的神色。它摸摸我的右手，手的颜色和那柔滑的样貌似乎使它十分羡慕。但是它又将我的手使劲地在它的蹄子与蹄骸中间猛夹，弄得我疼得大叫起来；这么一来，它们倒又尽量温存地抚弄我。它们看了我的鞋和袜感到十分困惑，不时地去摸一摸，又相互嘶叫一阵，做出种种姿势，就像是一位想要解决什么新的难题的哲学家。

　　29、我说，我要描述的这位首相大臣是这样一个人：他整个儿是哀乐无动于衷爱恨不明不一样情不动怒；至少你能够说，他除了对财富权力和爵位有强烈的欲望外，别的一概不动感情。他说的话当什么用都能够，就是不证明他的心。他每说一句实话，却总要想你会把它当成谎言，而每次说谎又都以为你会信以为真。那些被他在背后说得一塌糊涂的人，实际上是他最喜欢的人，而每当他向别人或当你的面夸奖你时，从那天起你就要倒霉。最糟糕的标志是你得到了他的一个许诺，如果他在向你许诺时还发了誓，那就更为糟糕；他这么做，每一个聪明人，都会自行引退，一切期望全都放下。
